Spencer's Gifts

Spencer's Gifts is a nationwide store chain offering fun gifts and novelties.

The company was founded in 1947 as a mail order catalog by Max Spencer Adler of Easton, Pennsylvania.

The company opened its first store New Jersey's Cherry Hill Mall in 1963. Discovering that people liked to see novelties before purchasing them, the store quickly expanded to 450 stores in 1967.

In 1967, Spencer's was acquired by MCA, Inc (Music Corporation of America). MCA started in 1924 as a music booking company. It diversified into film. MCA was forced, by the FTC, to sell its talent agency when it acquired a controlling stake in Universal Pictures.

In 1995, MCA was renamed Universal Studios and Spencer's operated at Universal Studios Stores.

In 1999, Spencer's acquired Spirit Halloween, which specializes in costumes and Halloween d&ecupte;cor.

In 2001, Vivendi acquired Universal Studios. Vivendi Universal sold Spencer's and Spirit Halloween to an investment group called ACON Investments..

Spencer's made a bid to buy Brookstone as the company entered bankruptcy procedures to lose to a China based group.

Spencer's has two online catalogs: Spencer's Online sells gag gifts and novelties. Spirit Halloween sells costumes.
