Kohls

With $19 billion in sales, Kohl's was ranked as the second largest department store in 2013. According to the 2013 Kohl's Corporation Fact Book (drawn April, 2014), Kohl's had 1,160 stores in 49 states.

Kohl's got its start in 1946 when Maxwell Kohl, the owner of a traditional grocery store, built a supermarket in Wisconsin. The first Kohl's Department Store went up in Brookfield, Wisconsin in 1962.

The British-American Tobacco Company (BATUS) bought controlling interests in Kohl's, which had grown to 50 supermarkets and six department stores. The Kohl family left management in 1979. BATUS expanded the Department Stores and later sold the grocery stores to A&P in 1983.

In 1986 senior management and investors bought Kohl's from BATUS and began the modern era of expansion. Kohl's had 40 stores with $300 million in sales at the time of the purchase.

In 1988, Kohl's purchased the Chicago based Main Street chain which added 26 stores to the family. Kohl's held their Initial Public Offering in 1988. They used the funds to expand their distribution center in Menomonee which allows Kohl's to expand to 259 stores by 1999.

Corporate Headquarters are in Menomenee Falls, Wisconsin. Kohl's trades on the NYSE with symbol KSS and currently employees over 40,000 people.
